Monzer Hourani

Founder & CEO

Monzer Hourani serves as the Founder & CEO of Medistar, a pioneering real estate development firm. Widely acclaimed for his innovative contributions and industry achievements, Mr. Hourani has been an integral part of Medistar’s growth journey since its inception in 1974. His visionary leadership has been instrumental in propelling Medistar into a nationally recognized real estate development powerhouse.

Additionally, Mr. Hourani has been committed to advancing human welfare through his noteworthy inventions. His dedication to improving the lives of others is epitomized by his recent recognition as ENR’s 2021 Engineer of the Year. Notably, he swiftly introduced a COVID-19 eradication HVAC filter, showcasing his proactive response to the global pandemic.

Monzer Hourani

Founder & CEO

Mr. Hourani is a graduate of the University of Texas, earning degrees in Structural Engineering and Architectural Studies. In 1971 he founded M. Hourani and Associates Consulting Engineers, a forerunner to Medistar that was deeply involved in the development of various engineering innovations used today. Most importantly, these include the post-tension slab-on-grade foundation system and spreader system in foundation engineering. As an engineering firm, M. Hourani and Associates was involved in the design of millions of square feet of office buildings, medical facilities, retail malls, hotels, high-rise condominiums, and other complex structures.

Since founding Medistar in 1974, Mr. Hourani has been fully involved in the development, financing and construction of advanced yet economical medical facilities spanning the entire continuum of care, including general hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, micro hospitals, integrated medical plazas and medical office buildings. Complementing its longstanding leadership in medical real estate, Medistar is actively developing major life science, multifamily, destination entertainment and mixed-use projects nationwide.

Mr. Hourani is a highly esteemed civic leader in the Greater Houston Area, with active memberships in various professional organizations including the American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction, and Post Tension Institute. He has been recognized by the American Society of Inspecting Engineers as a “leading innovator” in his field and received the “Outstanding Engineer of the Year” award in Houston in 1973. Additionally, Mr. Hourani is an inventor, and his most recent invention for purifying and cleaning air during the Covid-19 pandemic was of great importance. He was nominated as “Engineer of the Year” in the United States for 2021 by Engineering News Record.

Jeff Horton

Chief Financial Officer

Mr. Horton has over 20 years of real estate and corporate finance experience and joined Medistar in 2022 as CFO. He directs Medistar’s corporate and property finance strategies and leads Medistar’s accounting and asset management teams and analyzes the financial performance of properties, leases, tenants and the company, and directs Medistar’s corporate and property accounting, tax and treasury functions.

Prior to Medistar, he served as Managing Director, Financial Strategy at JLL where he partnered with brokers across service lines to comprehensively advise clients on optimal transaction structures, cost-saving opportunities and real estate value creation strategies for owned and leased property portfolios. His expertise includes corporate finance, real estate financial analysis, new transaction structuring, existing transaction restructuring, corporate banking, capital markets and advisory services. Mr. Horton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at the University of Texas at Austin, and an MBA in Corporate Finance and Real Estate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 

Mark Jang

EVP, Development & Acquisitions

Mr. Jang is a seasoned real estate professional with over 25 years of experience, specializing in healthcare projects. He has a wealth of experience in medical real estate, particularly in the areas of continuum care, rehabilitation, outpatient hospitals, and LTAC hospitals. His extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry has enabled him to achieve optimal outcomes for his partners and medical tenants. Mr. Jang possesses expertise in strategic initiatives, commercial real estate development, and project management.

Mr. Jang is responsible for various development activities, including but not limited to, strategy, client and tenant relationship management, feasibility analysis, cost planning, financial analysis, budget development and administration, coordination of architectural and engineering requirements, governmental approval coordination, project financing, and asset dispositions. Mr. Jang completed his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and attended the Executive MBA Program at Xavier University.

Gino Hourani

VP, Development & Acquisitions

Mr. Hourani joined Medistar in 2020 as a Senior Financial Analyst, and today serves the company as a Vice President, Development & Acquisitions. He has over 8 years of experience in commercial real estate and international manufacturing companies, which has equipped him with a broad perspective on business strategy and finance. At Medistar, Mr. Hourani works closely with the CEO, CFO, and development officers on de novo real estate developments, sale-leasebacks, and public-private partnership (P3) opportunities.

Mr. Hourani earned a BBA in Finance from the American University of Beirut and a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from Columbia University. His diverse educational background and professional experience have made him an invaluable asset to Medistar’s development and acquisitions team, ensuring the success of even the most complex projects, which include medical and health care projects.

Patrick Vance

VP, Development & Acquisitions

Mr. Vance joined Medistar in 2019 as a Financial Analyst and has since been promoted to Vice President, Development & Acquisitions. With over 6 years of experience in commercial real estate, he has developed a deep understanding of the real estate development process from start to finish. At Medistar, Mr. Vance works closely with the CEO, CFO, and development officers on feasibility analysis, proforma development, and project financing for some of Medistar’s most complex projects. He is in charge of Medistar’s health care developments located throughout the United States.

He is a graduate of Baylor University with a BBA in Real Estate and Entrepreneurship. Mr. Vance brings a wealth of knowledge to his role at Medistar, ensuring the successful execution of projects and delivering value to Medistar’s partners and investors.

Santiago Mendoza, Jr.

SVP, Business Development & Marketing

Mr. Mendoza, Jr. is a proud Gulf War U.S. Army Veteran, who brings over 25 years of experience in healthcare and joined Medistar in 2012 as Senior Vice President, Business Development & Marketing. He works directly with the CEO, CFO and executive team on strategic business development, marketing and a wide variety of special projects. He has an extensive proven record in developing and maintaining new business, strategic partnerships and planning, relationships and alliances; hospital syndications, hospital operations, public relations, physician relations and recruiting, and staff development.

Prior to Medistar, he was the Senior Vice President of Business Development, Marketing & Public Information Officer for Bay Area Regional Medical Center, a de novo hospital, and served as the senior leader in developing new business and strategic partnerships, identifying and negotiating merger and acquisition opportunities in health care and medical projects, overseeing development of clinical services lines and non-clinical services, leading strategic planning and guiding all marketing, branding and public relations activities.

John Lavino

SVP, Design & Construction

Mr. Lavino joined Medistar in 2020 and has nearly 50 years of national experience in the commercial and institutional construction industry, including senior leadership roles in over $2 billion of healthcare, higher education, multifamily, hospitality, retail and commercial office projects, each ranging from $5M to $300M in cost. Mr. Lavino brings veteran experience proactively managing schedules, quality and cost; reviewing contracts and proposed change-orders; overseeing contractors’ quality and safety programs; and building and managing robust teams – both in the office and in the field. Mr. Lavino earned certifications in OSHA 30, Fall Protection, First Aid / CPR and Confined Space, and is a LEAN Coach.
